In January 2022, the Government published the proposal for legislation to improve the UK's cyber resilience Consultation. The Government have outlined the need for new laws to drive up security standards in outsourced IT services used by almost all UK businesses.

The proposals look to highlight the need to make improvements in the way organisations report cyber security incidents and reforming legislation to be more flexible in its ability to react to the speed of technological change. The proposals covered by the consulations are to:

- Bring additional critical providers of digital services into the UK's cyber security regulatory framework to ensure that those providers who offer critical support to essential UK services, have adequate cyber security protections in place and can be regulated effectively.

- Future-proof the UK's existing cyber security legislation, primarily the Network and Information Systems (NIS) Regulations so that they can adapt to potential changes in threat and technological developments.

The paper includes a number of consultation questions in order to help the Government strengthen the UK's cyber resilience. In order to form our response to the consultation, techUK will be running a roundtable that will look to capture the initial member feedback and response.

techUK have invited a representative of DCMS to join the session.
