On 7 December 2022, techUK and partners brought together academics, philosophers, lawyers, technology experts, policy makers and other key stakeholders at techUK’s sixth annual Digital Ethics Summit. This year’s Summit took place in-person for the first time since 2019, and we were delighted to bring together speakers and delegates from across the digital ethics space to explore some of the most complex ethical challenges faced by society today.
Over the past six years, the Digital Ethics Summit has been a key date in the tech industry and civil society calendar, and the agenda has aligned closely with global developments; at first, we brought thought leaders together to explore the principles that must underpin a world of ethical technology. Since then, the conversation has moved on to ethics in practice, from private sector approaches to policy and regulatory initiatives, all of which we are now starting to see implemented.
This year, the Summit was set out to establish how effective these approaches have been to date and whether, as a community, we’ve learnt from past mistakes. We have assessed the impact of recent regulatory developments on the role of ethics and dived into emerging discussions of ethics in the metaverse, AI 'sentience' and the implications of cutting-edge technologies like high-performance computing. Across all themes, we were seeking to answer what action needs to be taken in the years ahead to ensure technology is developed and deployed in ways that help people to flourish and protect them from harm.
