Advancing the UK’s Quantum Leadership Through Innovation and Collaboration

Read the guest blog from Seagate as part of World Quantum Day 2025.

Quantum technologies promise transformative breakthroughs across industries, from secure communications to ultra-precise sensing and computing. As nations worldwide accelerate their quantum investments, the UK has a unique opportunity to establish itself as a global leader. However, achieving large-scale commercialisation requires a robust supply chain, significant R&D investments, and strong collaboration between industry, academia, and government.

The Role of Photonics and Data Storage in Quantum Advancement

Two key enablers of quantum technology are photonics and advanced data storage. Photonic technologies form the backbone of secure quantum communication networks, enabling the transmission of quantum information with minimal loss. Simultaneously, quantum computing and sensing require reliable quantum memory systems to store and retrieve quantum states efficiently. Developing these technologies at scale is essential for the UK’s long-term success in the quantum domain.

At Seagate, a global leader in storage solutions that will be needed to unlock the UK’s quantum opportunity, we believe that the UK should:

Strengthen Public-Private Partnerships - Encouraging collaborations between industry, academia, and government to drive quantum innovation. A notable example is EQUINOX, a UK-based collaborative R&D initiative. Seagate Technology, a global leader in data storage solutions, is playing a pivotal role in supporting the UK’s quantum ambitions through its expertise in photonics, data storage, and engineering. EQUINOX focuses on advancing photonic technologies for quantum communication, a critical area for secure information transfer. The impact of EQUINOX extends beyond research—it strengthens the UK’s position in quantum communication technologies, fosters deeper collaboration between industry and academia, and accelerates the commercialization of quantum innovations.

Invest in Scalable Infrastructure – Develop the necessary infrastructure for quantum communication, including photonic components and quantum memory systems. The UK should invest and support partnerships such as EQUINOX which contributes to building a resilient and scalable quantum infrastructure, ensuring the UK remains at the forefront of global quantum advancements. This partnership exemplifies how industry leaders can bridge the gap between fundamental research and real-world applications, paving the way for future breakthroughs in quantum security and data storage.

Enhance Funding Mechanisms – Ensure sustained investment in quantum research and commercialisation. Achieving large-scale commercialisation requires significant R&D investments. UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) plays a key role in funding quantum research through initiatives such as the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) Quantum Technologies Programme and the Innovate UK Smart Grants, which support businesses in scaling up quantum technologies. Increased funding will enable the transition from laboratory research to market-ready quantum solutions.

Develop a Skilled Workforce –Expand training programs in quantum through supporting clusters like Smart Nano NI which connect academia and industry. By leveraging its expertise in nanotechnology and photonics, Smart Nano NI can develop quantum skills through education, research, and commercialization initiatives. Investments in quantum labs, fabrication facilities, and testbeds will drive innovation, while career outreach and startup accelerators will attract talent and funding.

By focusing on these areas, the UK can position itself as a global quantum leader. With contributions from industry players like Seagate, alongside government and academic collaboration, the UK is well-equipped to unlock the full potential of the quantum revolution.

Sprint Campaigns

techUK's sprint campaigns explore how emerging and transformative technologies are developed, applied and commercialised across the UK's innovation ecosystem.

Activity includes workshops, roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, and flagship reports (setting out recommendations for Government and industry).

Each campaign runs for 4-6 months and features regular collaborations with programmes across techUK.

techUK's latest sprint campaign is on Robotic & Automation technologies. Find out how to get involved by clicking here.

New Space

Running from September to November 2023, this campaign explored how the UK can lead on the development, application and commercialisation of space technologies, bring more non-space companies into the sector, and ultimately realise the benefits of the New Space Economy.

These technologies include AI, quantum, lasers, robotics & automation, advanced propulsion and materials, and semiconductors.

Activity has taken the form of roundtables, panel discussions, networking sessions, Summits, thought leadership pieces, policy recommendations, and a report. The report, containing member case studies and policy recommendations, was launched in March 2024 at Satellite Applications Catapult's Harwell campus.
