Digital Transformation in Integrated Care Systems: North East and North Cumbria ICS
Professor Graham Evans, Chief Digital Officer for North East and North Cumbria (NENC) Integrated Care System, as well as Chief Information and Technology Officer for North Tees and Hartlepool NHS Foundation Trust, joined us for a market briefing with members.
Graham outlined several drivers of digital transformation, including widening health inequalities and the increasingly limited nature of financial resources, providing an overview of NENC’s digital strategy. The approach of this ICS to digital transformation is based around a continuous ethos of improvement, focussing on empowering citizens, patients, and staff. Graham highlighted that the strategy is aspirational and was designed to leave room for amendments. For instance, to add in a population health strategy more recently.
Graham chairs a digital delivery committee which looks at areas of priority and risk across the region, and which is currently developing a three-year costed delivery plan, providing a pipeline of aspirations and opportunities to be matched with funding openings.
Of note, Graham showcased the self-analysis NENC have undertaken in response to What Good Looks Like, addressing the key success measures and demonstrating where they feel NENC fit as region right now. The self-analysis revealed that as a region, they need to focus on digital transformation that improves citizen empowerment, ensures smart foundations, and enhances care.
Graham emphasised that ICSs are not just about provider organisations but primary care, community care, pharmacy, and the voluntary sector. Crucially, “digital is the glue that bonds the entire integrated care system together”.
