Flexibility Innovation Programme – Net Zero Innovation Portfolio - Funding Competitions Announcements

Background

The Flexibility Innovation Programme an overarching programme of £65 million, which seeks to enable large-scale widespread electricity system flexibility through smart, flexible, secure, and accessible technologies and markets. The Flexibility Innovation Programme will fund innovation across a range of key smart energy applications, and sits within the £1 billion Net Zero Innovation Portfolio (NZIP).

Interoperable Demand Side Response programme

The 2021 Smart Systems and Flexibility Plan set out a suite of policies to enable flexibility from consumers, known as “demand side response”.

The Interoperable Demand Side Response (IDSR) programme aims to support the development and demonstration of energy smart appliances for the delivery of interoperable demand side response.

The IDSR programme (of up to £9.15 million) consists of three streams of work ( , to support the innovation, design, and demonstration of interoperable Demand Side Response (DSR) systems.

Smart Meter System based Internet of Things applications programme

The Smart Meter System (SMS) based Internet of Things applications programme (of up to £1.8 million) aims to determine the technical and commercial feasibility of SMS-based IoT sensor devices (and any supporting data management tools that may be required). These devices are required to communicate via the GB Smart Meter System and Data Communications Company (DCC) network, and funding will be provided to enable successful applicants, working with an energy supplier(s), to design, build, test and trial the IoT sensor devices.

The programme consists of 2 phases:

  • Phase 1: feasibility, identifying applications and establishing the feasibility of solutions comprising IoT sensors and supporting data management tools suitable for operation within the Smart Meter System and DCC network
  • Phase 2: develop and trial, further develop the proposed technical solutions and build and deploy demonstration system and devices

Register your interest by 2pm on 5 July 2022.

The competition closes to applications at 12pm on 29 July 2022.

Smart Meter Energy Data Repository Programme

The Smart Meter Energy Data Repository (SEDR) programme, of up to £1 million, aims to support innovation to determine the technical and commercial feasibility of a smart meter energy data repository, quantify the benefits and costs of such a smart meter energy data repository, and simulate how it could work.

The programme consists of 2 phases:

  • Phase 1: feasibility, establishing the feasibility of a smart meter energy data repository through funding feasibility studies and proposing a Technical Solution for establishing a system-wide repository
  • Phase 2: developing and demonstrating a ‘proof of concept’ capable of simulating key features of a smart meter energy data repository and setting out recommendations for how a system wide repository may be created
