Since 2015, through our management of the U.K. Ministry of Defence’s Logistics Commodities & Services Transformation (LCST) programme, Leidos has been at the vanguard of revolutionising and enhancing the U.K.’s defence supply chain. Embedding resilience and sustainability has been a fundamental element of that partnership and our efforts to manage storage, distribution, and procurement for the U.K. Armed Forces. We drive supply chain improvements through energy efficiency and carbon reductions and by electrifying the fleet, minimising plastics, and introducing biodegradable alternatives, supporting the MOD to flight climate change, aligning to the Defence Select Committee’s recommendations towards Greening Government Commitments from 2025-30.
Leidos U.K. is set to become Carbon Neutral by 2030 and reaching Net Zero by 2040. The Leidos UK carbon reduction target is in line with the goals of the Paris Agreement and the latest climate science for limiting global warming to 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels. 2019 was selected as the baseline for emissions to act as the reference point against which emissions reduction can be measured for Leidos UK. In our latest reporting year, Leidos UK have seen a 43% reduction in carbon emissions since 2019.
Our ISO 14001 accredited Environmental Management System ensures we continually improve our environmental performance and Carbon Reduction Plan (CRP) is externally validated and included in Leidos UK submission to the Science Based Target initiative (SBTi). The CRP is updated annually, providing a clear roadmap and measurable metrics towards reduced emissions, water use, and waste.
With Leidos’ expertise, the UK Armed Forces leverages best-in-class technology to store and distribute over one-million stock lines and procure and manage over 70,000 items. The solution manages associated distribution and freight services for almost all MOD shipments, to over 600 sites worldwide with over 5,000 orders per day. Below are the steps we take to measure, monitor, and report on the environmental impacts in the delivery of this technology service:
As a result of these initiatives the LCST service can measure, monitor, and report on their environmental impacts. The programme has achieved 6% waste to landfill, increased recycling from 17% to 55%, decreased emissions generated by packaging by 54%, and 100% paper reduction against the receipting of obligations against three-way match – see graphic below:
In 2022 we provided all UK employees with access to the Giki Zero app. This provides our employees with a personalised programme to understand how to reduce their carbon footprint and protect the environment. We have regular 5-day challenges with a company leader board for teams to participate, with awards for ‘chief greenies’. This allows us as a business to capture data providing measurable impact – see employee metrics as of Jan 2024:
We have also implemented ‘Eco Champions’ at each of our Leidos sites who provide valuable insights on practical sustainability efforts and encourage adoption. They work with the Leidos Green Teams made up of a group of employees who work to identify opportunities that improve the sustainability of our organisation and develop actionable solutions for our goals. This provides an avenue for employees to engage in projects that actively benefit the world around them through local community developments and environmental improvements, while helping the company advance our Social Value goals.
