techUK publishes Digital Identity White Paper
On 6 February, techUK launched its white paper on Digital Identity. This paper has one key clear message: if the UK is to reap the full potential of the digital economy, access to digital services must be seamless, simple and secure for customers. To do this, and to ensure we do not fall behind other countries, we need an interoperable framework for digital IDs which spans the public and the private sectors.
Among other things, the techUK paper recommends:
- A Government policy for the creation of a fully functioning digital identity ecosystem across public and private sectors.
- The Government release plans for the creation of a framework of digital identity standards open to all players.
- One point of contact for digital ID within government.
- That digital IDs be seen on an equal footing as paper-based verification.
- A lawful basis for the processing of biometric data.
We live more and more of our lives online; new and innovative online services are popping up every day and it is clear that some of the most innovative combine data from across different areas of our lives. To be able to use all this data and to keep it safe, we need secure digital identities that allow easy access for the customer while safeguarding us from the increasing risk of online fraud. This will benefit customers, businesses and the economy as a whole.
