techUK's 'Web3 & Immersive technologies' campaign is now live

Today techUK has launched a six-month campaign exploring how the UK can lead on the development, application and commercialisation of Web3 and Immersive technologies.

This is part of techUK's flagship Unleashing Innovation campaign, an ongoing programme of activity that aims to empower our member organisations to realise the potential of UK technology and innovation by showcasing the possibilities of emerging technologies, convening key stakeholders and shaping innovation policy.

This latest campaign follows on from techUK's first campaign exploring the future of Gaming and Esports technologies, which launched in January 2024.

How will the campaign look?

The following six months will feature a wide range of activities chosen to make the most of techUK's expertise, sector networks, national and local reach, and 21 programme teams.

Planned activity includes:

  • Workshops and roundtables with Government, industry, academia and other stakeholders across the tech ecosystem
  • Panel discussions exploring the future of AI, Web3 and XR technologies, including opportunities for businesses and asks of Government
  • Networking and technology demo events to convene the sector and showcase innovative techUK member organisations
  • A flagship techUK report containing recommendations for industry & Government and to be published at the end of the campaign

techUK will work with a range of member organisations and stakeholders to make this campaign a reality. Contributors and collaborators include Innovate UK's Immersive Tech Network, Digital Catapult, Improbable, Linklaters, Shoosmiths, and the Metaverse Institute.

How can I get involved?

Employees of techUK member organisations and wider innovation stakeholders are encouraged to put themselves forward for writing, speaking and partnership opportunities throughout the campaign.

What are these technologies?

Web3 is an umbrella term for technologies that decentralise data ownership and control on the internet. These include Distributed Ledger Technologies (DLT) such as blockchain, digital tokens or currencies, and smart contracts.

Immersive technologies create distinct experiences by merging the physical world with a digital or simulated reality. Examples include Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Mixed Reality (MR) (collectively known as Extended Reality, or XR), haptics, and holograms.

How will the campaign begin?

The first event of the campaign is today's Future Visions: Web3 and AI webinar.

Taking place from 10-11am, this will convene world-leading experts across the fields of web3 technologies and AI to discuss the latest technological advancements, potential areas for UK Government support, and how businesses can make the most of the increasing convergence between these transformative technologies.

You can access the event round-up, which contains a recording of the session, here.
