UK-Japan Tech Forum 2024: Event Round-up

The UK-Japan Tech Forum took place on 16 July 2024, convened by techUK and JEITA 


UK-Japan Tech Forum: One Year On from the Hiroshima Accord

In May 2023, the UK and Japan signed the Hiroshima Accord, marking a significant milestone in deepening tech collaboration between the two nations. A year on, the UK-Japan Tech Forum—jointly convened by JEITA and techUK—brought together industry leaders and government representatives to assess progress, set new priorities, and explore opportunities leading up to Osaka 2025.

Key Moments from the Forum

Progress & Priorities of the Hiroshima Accord
The session began with government representatives outlining advancements made since the Accord’s signing, highlighting key areas of success and ongoing work. Speakers included:

  • Adam Jackson, Director, International Research and Innovation, DSIT

  • Mr. Takayuki Sako, Deputy Director, Digital Economy Division, METI

Industry experts from JEITA and techUK shared insights on how businesses have contributed to strengthening the UK-Japan tech alliance, with discussions led by:

  • Mr. Wada Akihiro, Chair, Working Group on Cybersecurity Enhancement, Keidanren

  • Ms. Miho Naganuma, Senior Executive Professional, NEC Corporation

  • Huw Thomas, SVP, Corporate Development Services, Intralink

Looking Ahead to Osaka 2025
With Expo 2025 in Osaka set to showcase Japan’s leadership in technology and innovation, the discussion turned to how the UK can actively engage in this global event. Key contributions came from:

  • Mr. Masafumi Sugano, Director, International Office, Expo 2025, METI

  • Jack Jones, Head of Strategic Technologies (Interim), DBT

  • Kaishini Jobling, Project Lead (Osaka 2025 Expo), DBT

Building Momentum: The Road Ahead
Closing remarks focused on sustaining momentum and ensuring real-world outcomes from UK-Japan tech collaboration. Tech industry leaders, Julian David, CEO of techUK, and Mr. Atsuo Hirai, Senior Executive Vice President of JEITA, emphasised the importance of continued engagement and working groups.
