As we aim to operationalise ethics in our emerging technologies, we must turn to AI Assurance mechanisms and standards to guide our development. Standards play a crucial role in shaping the future of emerging technologies, serving multiple essential functions.

This event will hear from the British Standards Institution (BSI), Innovate UK and other industry experts who develop standards and implementation guidance on how AI standards can help with business growth and organisational excellence. We will explore examples of how standards are used and adopted, from ISO 42001 (Artificial Intelligence Management System) to the forthcoming AI Risk Management Framework from ART 1 and the European AI committee, CEN/CLC JTC 21.

Such standards can drive innovation by providing a framework for best practices, enhance market competitiveness by demonstrating commitment to quality and ethics, facilitate interoperability through common expectations, ensure ethical alignment with societal values, and help mitigate legal and reputational risks. These business cases for standards underscore their importance in fostering responsible AI development and deployment.

techUK is keen to understand the evolving standards landscape and how it shapes digital ethics. By examining the interplay between standards, AI assurance mechanisms, and ethical principles, we can better navigate the complex terrain of AI development and deployment, ensuring that our technological advancements benefit society while minimising potential harms.
