As we aim to operationalise ethics in our emerging technologies, we must turn to AI Assurance mechanisms and standards to guide our development. Standards play a crucial role in shaping the future of emerging technologies, serving multiple essential functions.

This event will hear from the British Standards Institution (BSI), The Alan Turing Institute, NPL and BSI AI Standards Hub and The National Physical Laboratory and tech sector representatives who sit on committees and create these standards, providing insights into the standard-making process. We will explore examples of how standards are used and adopted, from ISO 42001 (Artificial Intelligence Management System) to the forthcoming AI Risk Management Framework from ART 1 and the European AI committee, CEN/CLC JTC 21.

Such standards can drive innovation by providing a framework for best practices, enhance market competitiveness by demonstrating commitment to quality and ethics, facilitate interoperability through common expectations, ensure ethical alignment with societal values, and help mitigate legal and reputational risks. These business cases for standards underscore their importance in fostering responsible AI development and deployment.

techUK is keen to understand the evolving standards landscape and how it shapes digital ethics. By examining the interplay between standards, AI assurance mechanisms, and ethical principles, we can better navigate the complex terrain of AI development and deployment, ensuring that our technological advancements benefit society while minimising potential harms.
