The Future Visions series explores the next-generation technologies at the cutting edge of research and development that are set to disrupt industries, challenge incumbents, and act as a catalyst for growth. Attendees have the opportunity to learn about the latest advances in technology from those at the heart of its development, equipping them and their business to take action and realise the potential of future technologies.

Previous topics have included metaverse, neuromorphic computing, and photonics.

This webinar took place on 8 April 2024. You can access the event recording and summary here.

Overview

The future of gaming is immersive. Whilst gaming has traditionally involved a clear separation between gamer and game, thanks to recent advances in technologies this boundary is becoming increasingly blurred.

Today, gamers can be transported into an alternative world, complete with cutting-edge graphics that replicate light and shadow with extreme realism and a suite of sophisticated sensors that enable more convincing augmented reality (AR) or virtual reality (VR) experiences. Such capabilities are supported by an increasingly sophisticated layer of technical infrastructure, including advanced semiconductors such as GPUs, edge computing and 5G-enabled connectivity.

This session will convene experts in the field of immersive technologies to discuss the following topics:

  • How are immersive technologies set to transform the gaming experience?
  • What technical infrastructure will these depend upon?
  • Is the UK well positioned to lead in these areas?
  • What more can UK industry and Government do to maximise the opportunities of immersive gaming?
