The Life Sciences Vision was published in July 2021, focussing on what Government, the NHS, regulators, companies, medical research charities, academia and philanthropy must do to create the environment in which industry can grow and succeed in the UK, and patients and the NHS can receive a real benefit.

The Vision will also focus on specific ‘Missions’ that are technology or disease specific. In each, there is an opportunity to take a VTF-type approach, with a single empowered decision maker to mobilise private and public sector science and investment. These missions will also help the NHS to solve some of the biggest healthcare problems of our generation. In this session members will have the opportunity to hear from the Deputy Director for Innovation and Growth in the Office for Life Sciences, to gain a better understand of the Healthcare Missions and the role that innovative technologies can play.

These missions are:

  1. Improving translational capabilities in neurodegeneration and dementia.
  2. Enabling early diagnosis and treatments, including immune therapies such as cancer vaccines.
  3. Sustaining the UK position in novel vaccine discovery development and manufacturing.
  4. Treatment and prevention of cardiovascular diseases and its major risk factors, including obesity.
  5. Reducing mortality and morbidity from respiratory disease in the UK and globally.
  6. Addressing the underlying biology of ageing.
  7. Increasing the understanding of mental health conditions, including work to redefine diseases and develop translational tools to address them.
  8. Create an environment that treats addiction as a chronic healthcare condition.
