Ofgem has initiated a comprehensive review of the regulatory framework governing electricity grid connections in Great Britain. This consultation seeks stakeholder input on proposed changes to enhance the efficiency and effectiveness of the connections process.
The electricity connections queue has exceeded 730 GW across transmission and distribution networks, surpassing future demand projections. This backlog results in prolonged wait times for new generation and demand projects, hindering progress toward net zero targets.
Addressing the connections backlog requires leveraging advanced digital technologies to enhance data visibility and accuracy. Implementing real-time data analytics can provide stakeholders with up-to-date information on network capacity and connection timelines. The ambition is to create a transparent, efficient, and customer-centric connections process that aligns with the UK's decarbonization goals. By integrating digital solutions, Ofgem aims to streamline the customer journey from application to energisation, ensuring timely and reliable connections. This approach supports the broader objective of facilitating the integration of renewable energy sources into the grid.
Consultation Objectives:
The consultation invites feedback on issues within the current connections process and solicits suggestions for improvements. It also seeks input on proposed incentives for the upcoming RIIO-T3 price control period to drive better performance from network operators.
Ofgem proposes introducing new incentives under the RIIO-T3 price control to encourage network operators to meet connection deadlines and improve service quality. These incentives may include financial rewards for timely connections and penalties for delays. The consultation also explores setting stricter obligations on network companies to adhere to agreed upon connection dates. Additionally, Ofgem seeks to enhance the quality and reliability of connection offers and associated documentation to ensure clarity and consistency for customers.
