The metaverse - a collection of virtual worlds in which we experience the life of our digital twin – may soon be a reality across a range public services in the UK.

techUK has previously explored the adoption of immersive technologies in the health sector, with use cases ranging from teaching to enhanced patient experiences. However, the emergence of the metaverse, with key characteristics focussed on interoperability, seamless immersion between virtual experiences and real-life, and user connectivity, could push forward these existing immersive use cases into new areas to enhance patient care and treatment. Whilst the potential of the metaverse may be exciting, the challenges around compute infrastructure, connectivity and usability will be crucial to overcome to move this technology from innovative to business critical.

In this event, as part of techUK’s Making the Metaverse campaign and in collaboration with the Health and Social Care programme, techUK will convene leading experts in the healthcare industry as they discuss the ways in which the metaverse could be used to improve patient outcomes and transform the healthcare experience.

In particular we will discuss:

  • Telepresence, digital twins, virtual hospitals? What is the “medical metaverse” and what are the different models it can take?
  • What treatments does the metaverse make possible, and how can existing, non-virtual treatments be combined with the metaverse?
  • How does the health service in the UK explore the adoption of these new technologies, and what would success look like?

Leontina Postelnicu

Head of Health and Social Care, techUK

Leontina joined techUK in March 2020, where she is now heading up the organisation’s Health and Social Care programme. At the moment, she is also completing an MSc in Health Policy at Imperial College London.

A former journalist, Leontina previously worked for the Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) as an associate editor for its International and Media divisions. There, she covered the EMEA region for Healthcare IT News, MobiHealthNews and HIMSS TV, with a focus on policy and innovation, and contributed to the Women in Health IT newsletter and HIMSS Insights eBook.

Outside of work, she enjoys reading, dancing, travelling and visiting her family in Romania, where she hails from.

Laura Foster

Associate Director - Technology and Innovation, techUK

Laura is techUK’s Associate Director for Technology and Innovation.

She supports the application and expansion of emerging technologies, including Quantum Computing, High-Performance Computing, AR/VR/XR and Edge technologies, across the UK. As part of this, she works alongside techUK members and UK Government to champion long-term and sustainable innovation policy that will ensure the UK is a pioneer in science and technology

Before joining techUK, Laura worked internationally as a conference researcher and producer covering enterprise adoption of emerging technologies. This included being part of the strategic team at London Tech Week.

Laura has a degree in History (BA Hons) from Durham University, focussing on regional social history. Outside of work she loves reading, travelling and supporting rugby team St. Helens, where she is from.
