At this techUK workshop, jointly hosted by the Tech & Innovation and Cyber programmes,  we will explore how we can ensure cyber resilience in a quantum-enabled future.

The often lengthy timelines for cybersecurity transitions and the emergence of “harvest now and decrypt later” attacks means businesses across all sectors need to think about how to secure their data against quantum. Indeed, some experts predict that a large-scale, fault-tolerant quantum computer could render all commonly used public key cryptography protocols no longer secure. From the UK’s emerging quantum ecosystem exciting and innovative solutions are emerging, such as quantum-safe communications, the software based post-quantum cryptography, and the hardware based quantum key distribution. These technologies are often complementary and can and could be combined in a hybrid manner to maximize effectiveness. Crucially, these technologies will be vital to the UK’s cyber power as discussed in the UK’s National Cyber Strategy.

Bringing together the UK’s cyber security ecosystem and the emerging quantum industry will be critical to navigate the best processes for adoption as these solutions emerge. Attendees will discuss the role techUK might play going forward, including potentially as a more formalised techUK Working Group.

As such, techUK will bring these two groups together to explore what the current quantum-cyber ecosystem looks like, how the UK can prepare for a quantum-secure future, and how to raise awareness around this once-in-a-generation transformation of cybersecurity. In particular this event will seek to address:

  • What current work is currently underway to prepare for the quantum secure transition?
  • Where does quantum fit into the UK’s National Cyber Strategy, ensuring that the UK remains confident, capable and resilient to new cyber threats?
  • What solutions are available, and how will they integrate into current cyber infrastructure?
  • What can businesses do now to mitigate future Quantum Risk
  • How can the UK lead in quantum security, building upon its thriving cyber ecosystem and developing best practice?

Speakers and workshop facilitators include:

  • Steve Beeching, SVP Government Relations, Arqit
  • Chris Parker, Director, Government (Cybersecurity), Fortinet
  • Zygmunt A Lozinski, Global Industries Senior Technical Staff Member and Quantum Ambassador, IBM
  • Dan Patefield, Head of Programme, Cyber and National Security, techUK
  • Laura Foster, Head of Programme, tech and Innovation, techUK
