The past twelve months have seen a sustained period of scrutiny and policy activity in the telecoms sector: from the new security framework for 5G, to the resilience of our networks during the COVID pandemic. Are we set on the right path to ensure the opportunities of advanced connectivity are captured? From our public macro networks to private wireless for enterprise, 2021 is a pivotal year for the UK’s network future. In this panel session, we will examine the key principles for building our 5G and future networks—from security, resilience, technological innovation, to sustainability and digital inclusion—and how the UK’s telecoms operators, vendors, and the wider ecosystem are working together on these foundations to help meet the demands and needs of a dynamic UK economy.

The UK accounts for approximately 2% of telecoms suppliers’ global mobile revenues, with the UK Government cognisant that we will not drive significant change in the market independently. How can the UK build global consensus on the pressing issue of telecoms supply chain diversification? What is our value proposition as a market in which to trade, invest and innovate?
Our final panel session will explore the UK’s telecoms policy as it intersects with global tech evolution and industrial strategy, and how the key principles of openness, competition and diversity will meet the interests of all states that want to ensure a fair, secure and resilient global telecoms supply market.
